Cinnamon Pinecones

Here is a suggestion for decorating the house for the fall holidays:

You need to let this "set" for several weeks, so you don't want to wait until the last minute if you want them for the holidays this year LOL!

To scent 2 pounds of cones you will need:

· 3-4 ounces of cinnamon oil
· 1/2 pound of whole 3" cinnamon sticks
· a large heavy duty plastic garbage bag
· small bristled paintbrush. DO NOT use foam brushes

Use traditional scents such as cinnamon, clove, cedar and orange oils – blended together or separately – and brush each cone. Place cinnamon sticks and pine cones in the garbage bag. If you have leftover oil (this will depend on how heavily you brushed it on cones) sprinkle some on top of bag mixture. Seal bag tightly and leave mixture in bag for 4-8 weeks. Shake and toss the bag once a week to blend the mixture.

Using the same method for scenting, here is another mixture recipe to put in the "garbage" bag. For two pound of pine cones you'll need:

· 4-6 oz. dried orange peels
· 2-3 oz. dried orris root
· 2 oz. cinnamon sticks
· 1 oz. eucalyptus leaves
· or, use your imagination and include your favorite dried botanicals,

Oil mix :

· 1.5 oz. cinnamon leaf essential oil
· 1.5 oz. clove bud essential oil
· 1.5 oz. sweet orange oil essential oil
· 1.5 oz. apple or apple spice fragrance oilM
· dash of myrrh, frankincense, bay, coriander, anise, cedarwood, lemon and/or juniper essential oils

Brush cones with the oil mix, then place in bag with other ingredients. Tie tightly and let sit for 4-6 weeks, shaking and mixing once or twice a week. Once you have scented the cones, the next step is finding a way to display or package them. If you intend to sell them, you might consider some festive calico material or shiny netting, with a pretty ribbon or bow to match. You don’t even have to sew! Cut a large square of fabric, place pine cone potpourri in the middle and gather fabric up around the cones. To secure, tie gathered end with a ribbon and make a bow. Decorate with small embellishments such as berry “picks” or hot glue some cinnamon sticks to the bow.

Another way to enjoy your scented cones is in a glass jar, or open glass container, such as an empty fishbowl or cookie jar. You can embellish this, as well, or cover, to keep scent longer.
